Meghalaya

Abode of Clouds

Meghalaya (Abode of clouds in Sanskrit) is one of the seven North Eastern states of India. Meghalaya, known for its rich biodiversity, produces a variety of unique food products, largely cultivated by indigenous farmers using traditional and organic methods. The state is famous for its Lakadong turmeric, renowned for its high curcumin content, and its premium-quality ginger. Meghalaya also grows black pepper, bay leaves, and honey, which are widely sought after. The region’s farmers specialize in cultivating indigenous rice varieties like Joha and sticky rice. Additionally, the state is known for Khasi mandarin oranges, Sohiong (wild black cherry), and a variety of millets and pulses. The local farming community practices sustainable and organic agriculture, preserving the region’s natural fertility and traditional farming heritage.

Manipur

The verdant valleys of Northeast India

In the verdant valleys of Northeast India, Manipur stands as a living testament to organic farming excellence, where traditional agricultural practices blend seamlessly with modern sustainable methods. Through the Manipur Organic Mission Agency (MOMA), the state has established itself as a powerhouse of organic agriculture, creating a robust ecosystem for natural farming.

At the heart of Manipur’s organic treasures lies its crown jewel—the famous black rice, locally known as Chakhao. This unique variety boasts a deep purple hue when cooked and offers a delightful nutty, subtly sweet flavor. What makes it extraordinary is its rich concentration of anthocyanin, which provides potent anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anticancer properties.

Recent developments have strengthened Manipur’s position in the organic market. The state has received four Geographical Indication (GI) tags for different fruits, vegetables, and crops, recognizing their unique qualities and protecting their authenticity. This certification ensures that consumers worldwide can trust the origin and quality of Manipur’s organic products

Ladakh

Abode of Clouds

The region’s commitment to organic farming took a formal turn with the Ladakh Organic Mission, an initiative aimed at transforming the area into an organic farming hub. This wasn’t just a policy decision – it was a natural evolution of Ladakh’s traditional farming methods, which had never relied heavily on chemical inputs. What’s truly remarkable is how these ancient farming practices have naturally aligned with modern organic principles.

Among Ladakh’s organic treasures, two products stand out. First are the famous Ladakhi apricots, prized for their exceptional sweetness and nutritional value. These apricots are grown without chemicals and are often sun-dried, preserving their intense flavor and nutritional benefits. The second is sea buckthorn, a miracle berry that thrives in Ladakh’s harsh climate. This superfood has become increasingly popular globally, being used in everything from jams to medicines and cosmetics.
